Samenvatting

The Advanced Vehicle Command and Control System (AVCCS) is being developed to solve capacity problems on major urban highways using automation and current technology. Some adaption of steering and braking systems is required. The main part of AVCSS, is the passive transponder embedded in the pavement at 100 foot intervals, which provides the vehicle with its location heading and distance to the next pavement transponder. The operation of the route guidance system is described, and full automated control is possible for limited access routes. The command control system (CCS) is equipped with a cellular radio which provides the driver with updates on current driving conditions, at the same time informing the navigation system of the precise location of other vehicles in proximity. Failsafe safety procedures are incorporated for driving in the full automated control mode.
