In coping with problems in highway planning, design, construction, and maintenance, highway engineers need a greater capability for obtaining required data quickly and efficiently. Obtaining and handling expanding volumes of data can be facilitated through the use of a unified information system which collects, stores, updates, and retrieves data. The system is actually an integrated photogrammetric data bank which is being developed by using aerial photography, semiautomated analog-digital readout equipment, automatic line plotters and electronic data processing. The object of this data bank is to provide data and information to the highway engineer for work in which road and area detail are necessary. The advantages are speed, accessibility, and flexibility.
