Age and sex profiles of speeding offenders, drink drive offenders and drivers of vehicles involved in casualty crashes were compared, both overall and within various subsets of drivers. The age distributions for speeding offenders and drink driving offenders showed peaks in the early 20's, and steep declines with increasing age. The distribution for drivers involved in casualty crashes was similar, however the peak was prior to age 20. For drivers who were recorded as having committed an apparent error, the decline was more rapid, however there was an increase in numbers between about ages 60 and 75. Males and females appeared in similar numbers for casualty crashes, but males were more common with speeding and drink driving offences. With an increase in the severity of the speeding offences, came an increase in the proportion of male and young drivers. Increased severity of drink driving saw no such result. With an increase in severity of road crashes, the proportion of males increased, but not the proportion of young drivers. This report should assist with the better targeting of countermeasures for speeding and drink driving, and provide insight into the relationship between speeding, drink driving and road crashes.
