The subject of collision-involvement among youthful drivers who have been drinking should not be discussed as a single problem phenomena. It must be recognized that the excessive use of alcohol by youth may be one problem and that collision-involvement by youth may be a totally different and unrelated problem. This article is concerned with the combination of those two problems, which results in the third: alcohol-related crashes involving youth. The third problem includes just those collisions which would not have occurred had the driver not been drinking. This may also include drinking that may not have been a problem if the drinker had not been driving.
