All valid Japanese drivers' license records and traffic accident data were analysed in order to describe the relationship between traffic violations and traffic accidents in each age group. Traffic violations were classified into 6 categories and drivers were classified into 8 generations so that the age trend for each type of violation could be observed. The age trend for the probability of causing an accident in each type of violation was also examined. Speeding decreased dramatically with age in the number of arrests, but its probability of causing an accident was almost at the same level when drivers were 25 and over. Drunken driving remained at high level until the 40s and then decreased with age, but the probability of causing an accident increased in the age 40s and older. Violations such as passing through a red light and driving in a wrong traffic passageway showed a similar pattern. Both violations stopped decreasing after the age 30s, and the probability of causing an accident started increasing after the age 30s. For the covering abstract see ITRD E116488.
