Samenvatting

This paper highlights a basic theoretical plan for Automated Highway System development focusing on strategy. Safe driving should be set as a short term objective and the various technological feasibilities should be studied through AHS «evolution». «Evolution» includes three steps: AHS-i (Information), AHS-c (Control) and AHS-a (Automated cruise). AHS-i supports a phased application for information provision. AHS-c establishes functions for information provision and partial control, and AHS-a offers full control. International cooperation is vital to ensure interoperability and to facilitate efficient system development.
