Samenvatting

The AIDA project, backed by the French Ministry of Industry, began in 1996 to develop further the ADAMS vehicle-to-roadside communication system. It is being run by CS Route in partnership with Renault, PSA, and motorway operator COFIROUTE. Its objectives are to: (1) build an onboard system using 5-8GHZ DSRC technology, which can deliver dedicated added-value information and conforms to European Standards CEN TC278 WG9 and WG4; (2) provides drivers with real-time information about the driving conditions on the motorway ahead of them; (3) collect relevant data about traffic and weather conditions; and (4) launch a field trial, involving 500 vehicles equipped with onboard units, along 100km of motorway from Paris to Orleans. The full-scale trial will be run in 1998, and aims to evaluate the integrated system as a whole. AIDA will deliver location-specific real-time information direct to the dashboards of participating vehicles, but it will send it only at a relevant time, when it is likely to affect the driver's route decision; its information is also self-sufficient. AIDA improves motorway driving safety, as it sends vehicles advance warning of any adverse conditions ahead. It can connect with other media, to ensure continuity of service between highways, urban areas, and suburbs.
