This Special Publication `Airbag technology (SP-1333)' includes papers presented at the 1998 SAE International Congress & Exposition, held in Detroit, Michigan, USA, February 23-26, 1998. These papers deal with engineering of various aspects of air bag systems, their performance in real world crashes, consumer perceptions of their effectiveness, medical issues, and discussions of how "high-tech" will help improve air bag performance. The majority of the papers is oriented toward frontal crashes. One part of the sessions of this SAE conference is devoted to addressing the emerging air bag technologies for occupant protection in lateral collisions. This technology may become of even greater importance in the future as it applies to occupant protection problems posed by light trucks, vans, and sport-utility vehicles.
