To protect human health and other assets, the EU has set limit values for various air pollutants. The EU Directive 2008/50/EG was transposed into German law by the 39th BImSchV. If the air quality limit values of the 39th BImSchV are exceeded, air quality plans for the affected areas must be set up in accordance with §47 BImSchG. Such air quality plans include results of an air quality analysis and a catalogue of measures to improve air quality and thus to comply with the limit values. In the past, there has been a variety of activities (especially in connection with the compilation and implementation of air quality plans) for the formulation, assessment and implementation of measures on traffic routes. In order to provide an opportunity to get an overview of these different activities, the MARLIS database was developed and continuously updated since 2006. The database contains detailed information and data on many measures, their applicability and - as far as results are available – data on effectiveness of implemented measures. As there is no quantitative indication of the effectiveness for a large number of measures taken from the literature sources (e. g. air quality plans), all measures were evaluated with a rating scheme, containing various criteria generated from measures with quantitative information on the impact. The MARLIS database serves as a source of information for competent authorities about possible measures to comply with road design limits, but it also provides a good source of information for selecting appropriate measures in the field of air pollution control for existing roads. The database offers the opportunity to obtain an overview of the multitude of possible air pollution control measures on traffic routes and can also be used to search for detailed information and further links for individual measures. The goal of this project is to further develop and expand the MARLIS database. The continuous updates of MARLIS over the past few years have led to a steady increase of registered measures in MARLIS, as well as to an expansion of existing measures with experiences of their implementation and their individual effectiveness. MARLIS was re-developed and published as an online version in March 2017. This is a significant simplification for the applicability, since there is no need to install and maintain the software locally on user’s computer. (Author/publisher)
