The number of motorcyclists fatally injured in Canada has gradually increased over the past decade and considerable attention has been given to vehicle-related defects and environmental factors even though these are rarely the principal cause of road crashes. Less attention has been paid to driver states or conditions, such as those associated with alcohol and other drug use, or to other driver-related characteristics. This paper provides preliminary findings designed to help fill this information gap by examining the epidemiology of alcohol and cannabis in motorcycle crashes.
