Samenvatting

The effects of alcohol on cerebral function and behaviour in relation to driving skills are described. The most important effect is upon the emotional attitude with respect to risk taking. The rapidly rising risk of an accident with increasing blood alcohol is emphasised. Factors affecting the absorption and elimination of alcohol are discussed with an emphasis being placed on the fixed rate of elimination which may leave drivers impaired many hours after the cessation of drinking.
