In the literature the proportion of drivers in fatal traffic accidents with alcohol, drugs or both varies greatly. According to official Finnish statistics, about 1 /5 of the fatal traffic accidents involve alcohol. These statistics, and many studies of prevalence are based on chemical analyses but they are often inaccurate because of unrepresentative and biased material. This work is a study of the true prevalence of alcohol and drugs in fatal accidents in Uusimaa, the southernmost and most populated province of Finland.
