The subject of this study is the relationship between alcohol consumption and traffic behaviour. Other social research has suggested that young people, of 16 to 25 years, with a low level of education are more frequently involved in accidents in which alcohol plays a part. For that reason, this category of young people was chosen. The authors found differences in the knowledge about alcohol between three groups of young people: students, the employed and the unemployed. Of these groups, the unemployed young people have the best knowledge of alcohol and drink the most. Students drink less and know little about alcohol. Many young people turned out to believe in popular misconceptions with regard to alcohol, for instance, that coffee has a sobering effect. It is on such incorrect information that the young people base their actions, which quite often lead to undesirable traffic behaviour. On the basis of this study, three recommendations with regard to information programmes can be given: a) The information must be directed to existing groups (subcultures), through intermediaries. The way in which a young person deals with alcohol and the alcohol traffic combination is influenced by his group culture; b) Guidance must also be given to those under 16 years. They have not yet developed drinking habits and they are not yet allowed to drive mopeds or cars; c) Along with the presentation of unpleasant information, alternatives such as public transportation and hostels should be expanded and encouraged.
