This article details two devices in development which identify whether a driver is over the alcohol limit. One device adapts technology already in use to monitor diabetic blood glucose levels to measure drivers' blood alcohol content. It is non-invasive, employing infra-red light to scan the dermis layer of the skin. A miniature sensor is also being tested which measures a breath sample and if an illegal blood alcohol level is detected the engine is immobilised. These devices need to be voluntarily accepted by the driving public to be effective.
