It appears that alcohol increases injury not only by increasing the probability of on injury producing event but also by rendering the body more vulnerable to injury from any given impact. Studies of cerebral and spinal cord endema suggest that in the event of central nervous system damage, an intoxicated victim in more likely to become permanently disabled.
