The topic of this dissertation was to examine the prevalence of psychoactive substances among all injured patients admitted to hospital for treatment. The study had a cross sectional design with data collected from patients older than 18 years admitted with injuries to the Emergency Department (ED) at Oslo University Hospital, Ullevål. Psychoactive substances were surveyed by both self-reporting and blood sample analyses and the benefits of the two methods were evaluated. Blood samples from the patients were analysed for the most common impairing psychoactive substances including alcohol, medicinal and illicit drugs. The risk potential of the psychoactive substances was investigated for injured drivers. (Author/publisher)
