Samenvatting

The authors discuss the incidence of drink driving in Germany during the periods immediately before and after unification. Between 1975 and 1990 the number of alcohol- related injuries and fatalities were decreasing steadily in both East and West Germany. Between 1991 and 1995 the decrease continued in West Germany but in East Germany there was a dramatic increase in alcohol-related road accidents and injuries. More recently the situation has improved but the share of alcohol related injuries (15% as against 10%) and fatalities (20% as against 18%) is still higher in the former East Germany than in the former West Germany.
