Samenvatting

A Uniform Vehicle Classification System for Canada, known as "Canada Scheme A", is being developed by the Transportation Association of Canada. The system provides 22 vehicle classes that are a super-set of FHWA Scheme F, and allows three additional classes to be defined by users. This paper describes development of a prototype algorithm for vehicle classification according to Canada Scheme A. The algorithm uses axle spacing data from a vehicle classifier, or axle spacing and axle weight data from a weigh-in-motion system. If either of these systems also provides vehicle length data, that can be used too. (A)
