Samenvatting

This is the final report of the first phase of the ASTRID (Algorithms and Systems for the Benefit of Travel Time Information on DRIPs (Dynamic Route Information Panels)) project. The report should be considered as a decision document, summarising the principal findings and formulating recommendations for a possible pilot. Several aspects have been addressed within the ASTRID project, comprising the following studies: `State of the art traffic information on Dynamic Route Information Panels (DRIPs)'; `Effects of information provision on traffic performance at the Rotterdam beltway'; `Travel time estimators: an overview of methods and application for ASTRID'; `Functional specifications of algorithms for estimating travel times & queue lengths and information strategies: ASTRID'; and `the ASTRID user behaviour study'. In the user behaviour study the following aspects were investigated: (1) which type of information road users desire and how various types of information are appreciated; and (2) which text strategies are appreciated best, how road users adjust their behaviour in response to information and whether information is comprehensible.
