There is a need for reexamination of forecasts of vehicle ownership and its side-effects. This is done in the following headings: The mainstream in car population forecasts, the pattern of values around the private car, air pollution, noise nuisance, safety on the road, automated motorways, the consumption of raw materials and fuels, scenarios for car ownership and use.
