Samenvatting

Significant increases in highway transportation services will be required over the next 20 years to meet the needs of both industrialized and developing countries. The increased price of oil has caused two competitors to become economically attractive. These alternatives - synthetic fuels and fuel economy improvements can economically displace more than a third of the petroleum that would otherwise be required for transportation by the end of the century, permitting a doubling of service with a growth in petroleum consumption of less than one percent per year.
