The challenges facing transportation asset managers in local government in Australia are many including, knowing what funding is required to provide the required levels for service for transportation services from the local road network, knowing what funding is currently being spent on the local road network, knowing whether there is a ‘funding gap’ and what are the consequences of a funding gap and what can be done to reduce the funding gap and/or service levels to a level that the community is willing and able to afford. The paper explores current knowledge and practice in these areas and makes recommendations for future direction at the national and local level including identifying the share of ownership costs of the local road network that each level of government should bear.
