The aim of the project presented in this report was to use a basically obvious method when choosing road safety measures. The method includes a diagnosis of the road safety problem and an analysis concerning the actions to be taken, as well a realisation and evaluation of the chosen measures. The analysis was based on actual accidents, which were examined with reference to possible accident causes and associated road user behaviour. An attempt has been made to verify the conclusions from the accident analysis through studies of actual road user behaviour in the traffic environment. These behavioural studies, in addition to other traffic data, formed the basis of the analysis resulting in the choice of measures, and were also used for before-measurement of the independent variables to measure the effect of actions.
