Samenvatting

This is the first part of a series of reports issued to chart road safety in the Hoeksche Ward and to make an inventory of ideas for the future. A comparison was made of road safety in the Hoeksche Ward with that of a reference area located in the western part of the province of North Brabant. In this `SWOVAGEM' analysis (road hazard analysis for municipalities) the 1984-1995 period was studied. The results of the analysis showed an increase in the number of victims per 1,000 inhabitants in the Hoeksche Ward: from 2,4 in the 1984-1986 period to 2,6 in the 1993-1995 period. This means an increase in the number of victims of about 8%. The results also showed an increase in the accident severity in the 1993-1995 period compared with the 1984-1986 period. In the Hoeksche Ward, the number of victims as a result of collisions with cyclists or moped riders were higher than in thereference area. Cyclists or moped riders accounted for 39% of the total munber of victims in the Hoeksche Ward. Car occupant victims represented approximately 45% of the total number of victims.
