The investigations being carried out by a large motor insurance company to find out the extent to which variations in the claims experience can be attributed to each of the factors for which data are available are described. A numerical example illustrates results obtained for private cars comprehensively insured for social, domestic and pleasure purposes and limited business use, with policy-holders aged 26-65.
