Samenvatting

Telework is considered as an element in the broad context of information science as a way of organising working hours and other services. Through such technology, it is possible to be virtually present at the workplace and so create a potential for substituting physical transport with virtual mobility. A study has been completed by the Finnish Technical Research Centre (VTT), estimating the Finnish telework potential as regards the possibilities of workers transferring to telworking under certain conditions. Long-distance commuting can be considered as a motivating factor for teleworking, although in Finland long distance commuters (over 50 km) represent only 4% of the working population. However, they account for a third of vehicle km travelled. Estimates are presented of yearly savings based on 200,000 teleworkers for one day per week covering driving expenses, accident expenses, and emission costs.
