The lower extremity can be conveniently divided into several subunits- the pelvic region, the thigh, leg, ankle and foot. The pelvis is that region that includes the posteriorly located gluteal muscles and the bony pelvis. The thigh (not upper leg) is that region from the pelvis to the knee. The leg, (not lower leg) is that anatomical unit between the knee and the ankle.
