ANWB has investigated both fuel consumption and waiting times on central urban roads and ring roads with and without green waves. The test runs were made by an 1100 cc Ford Fiesta and a 1600 cc Fiat Mirafiori. In urban conditions the Fiesta consumed 51% and the Mirafiori 31% more petrol on non-green waves. On ring roads these percentages were 26 and 34. It seems to be important that the philosophy of traffic light settings should concentrate more on minimizing stops instead of waiting times.
