The application of cellular automata to the modelling of chaotic road traffic systems.

There have been few attempts to describe traffic behaviour in highly-congested urban road environments characterised by a wide range of vehicular types. Such environments can be found in many Asian cities where user behaviour can be described as more 'chaotic' than is evident in other urban environments where adherence to rules, such as keeping to a lane, is seen as a basic premise for road design and traffic operation. Each type of system achieves its main goal- to move people and goods -but it is only the latter, heavily-structured type that has been modelled with any degree of success. One possible method of modelling chaotic road traffic systems is to use cellular automata (CA). This paper briefly describes cellular automata, looks at some CA models that have been applied to chaotic movement ( eg pedestrians), and offers possibilities of applying CA to chaotic, bi-directional, mixed-user road traffic systems.
