This paper presents a case study of the use of a CONTRAM traffic model in community traffic studies in the City of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The City of Calgary Community Traffic Study has been using the following process: (1) a local community initiates the process by defining perceived problems and forming a traffic committee; (2) the Transportation Department investigates problems by collecting and analysing data; (3) the data are reviewed with the community, to assess the problems, and alternative solutions are developed; (4) the community is surveyed to find its opinions of the alternatives, and informed of the results; (5) measures supported by the community are implemented on a trial basis and implemented on a trial basis and monitored; and (6) modification or removal of some previous traffic control measures, and implementation of some new measures, on a trial and error basis. The Rundle Traffic Study is described; Rundle is a community in north east Calgary, with about 11,500 people. After its traffic conditions had been analysed, ten alternative traffic measures were developed. The paper tabulates the community's opinions on these measures, and outlines ten specific benefits of the successful use of CONTRAM to improve the community study process.
