Samenvatting

The paper describes the application of knowledge-based techniques in a traffic control center (TCC). The extension of the TCC Hessen, which is using such methods, was finished in November 2001. The TCC Hessen is the operational part of the Traffic Center Hessen (TC Hessen), which is located in Frankfurt since October 2001. The system was build by Heusch/Boesefeldt, based on a contract between the federal state of Hessen and Heusch Boesefeldt, with financial support of the Ministry of Transport, Building and Housing, and is now operated by the TC. The motivation of the federal state of Hessen to choose this approach when requesting the software extension of the TCC is pointed out. The knowledge-based approach will be described as well as the resulting system concept. Finally the paper will elaborate on lessons learned and present an outlook.
