The ability of the MADYMO program to analyze occupant response and evaluate occupant protection designs has been well proven. In this study of heavy truck crashworthiness, attempts have been made to verify the accuracy of MADYMO in simulating occupant motions in heavy truck crashes. The modelling effort in the study was challenging because the heavy truck interior geometry is quite different from that of passenger cars. In addition, heavy truck steering wheel and seat components have more complex structural and geometric configurations. For example, the driver's seat has an air suspension, and the restraint system is attached to the seat. This paper elaborates the modelling effort required to develop and validate a .MADYMO model for simulating occupant motions in heavy truck crashes.
