Samenvatting

This paper presents an innovative application of remote sensing and spatial technologies for the Oxford Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) integration project, a rural area model ITS. The ITS project work plan was developed through intensive brainstorming and interaction among all major stakeholders including the city officials, public representatives, University of Mississippi officials and students, and local civic organizations. The backbone of the Oxford ITS project is the creation of the most precise map of Oxford and its vicinity using innovative applications of modern remote sensing technologies including airborne laser mapping and georeferenced aerial photogrammetry techniques. The data are being incorporated into a comprehensive geographic information system that can be integrated with traffic surveillance equipment to monitor real-time flow, accidents and responses, and also provide online traffic information to the public.
