On the application of a response surface methodology to traffic signal settings.

A response surface methodology put forward by other authors as an aid to improving traffic signal settings in a street network, is discussed. As an example of this approach these authors applied the methodology to a six-intersection street network, and defined 15 different problems for the network involving both controllable and fixed variables. Some comments concerning the results of the example are presented.
