The INTEGRATION traffic simulation model was developed to analyse a number of specialised problems related to the operation and optimisation of integrated motorway/arterial traffic networks, of traffic control and route guidance and other IVHS systems. Due to the different characteristics of traffic flow that need to be modelled on motorways and signalized networks, INTEGRATION analyses traffic flows in terms of vehicles that are individual entities. This microscopic approach permits a traffic flow representation which is common to all types of networks. It also permits a continued dynamic assignment. The vehicles are shown individually during the simulation. This allows for a detailed analysis of detailed analysis of the traffic process. The model has a number of special features, such as lane-changing and car-following logic, vehicle emissions and driver classes to represent different route choice behaviour.
