Samenvatting

The New Federal States of Germany were experiencing unprecedented structural changes during the last decade of the 20th century. The rise in the standard of living and the increase of mobility are representing appreciable consequences. However, the dramatic growth of mobility demand did cause serious traffic problems in all conurbations: rapid suburbanisation processes and the "explosion" of private car ownership are the main driving forces for this undesirable development. The research project "INTER-MOBIL REGION DRESDEN" tries to develop and evaluate a complex approach to intermodal mobility control which could contribute to ensure mobility and to reduce its unintended effects. For this purpose the Dresden Region stands for the class of medium-sized conurbations with a population between 0.5 and one million considering the very special challenges facing East Germany's urban areas. A brief overview of the Dresden approach is presented in this paper. For the covering abstract see ITRD E114174.
