This paper presents an architecture for a driver information system using smartphones and discusses experiences from the first tests and similar information systems. The architecture is based on an existing public transport passenger information system, called Noppa. The idea is to provide drivers information on speed limit, street name, road accidents, traffic jams, road conditions and other safety related information regarding the route or driving direction. A software is installed to the user's mobile phone and it connects to an information server. Information is presented as simple graphics and sounds. The software must not require input from the user while driving or take too much of the driver's attention. The concept has also some national aspects because of Finland's high interest in mobile technologies, relatively low population density, lack of automobile industry and winter weather.
