Samenvatting

This report investigates trends in summer travel on major highways that lead to popular destinations for tourists and summer vacation trips, and the amount of traffic delay caused by bottlenecks on highways and roads on the routes that approach these tourist destinations. This study explores a special segment of non-commuting travel - tourist and recreational trips. It ends with recommendations for minimizing travel delay during vacation trips in the summertime. Major findings of the study include the following: (1) As the amount of summer travel and the level of tourism increases, getting to summertime destinations (such as lakes and beaches) is becoming more difficult. (2) Traffic delays on roads that serve as primary access routes for visitors are common on many roads that lead to lake regions, sea shores, and national parks. (3) Seasonal traffic congestion on these roads is likely to continue to worsen if no improvements are undertaken on these highways and roads.
