Samenvatting

A brief account is given of the work of the Association des Paralyses de France (APF) Holiday Service which provides specially tailored holidays for people with physical handicaps. Destinations include France and 10 other countries in western Europe and will be extended to include Canada, the United States, China, India and Israel. Stages in the transport involved in such journeys are examined and problems identified. Travel to the meeting point is by taxi, private car or special transport. Transport to the railway station, airport or port is by coach or minibus and is arranged by APF. SNCF trains are used and for long-distance air travel both French and foreign carriers. During the holiday transport is required for days out and touring. The main problems encountered in air travel are described in terms of staff, equipment and aircraft design. In rail travel problems are also found in the areas of staff, rolling stock and interchanges. APF feel that they are in a good position to advise on new projects and are particularly concerned about staff training.
