Samenvatting

CARE (Community database on Accidents on the Roads in Europe) is a community database on road accidents that resulted in death or injury (no statistics on damage - only accidents). The major difference between CARE and most other existing international databases is the high level of disaggregation, i.e. CARE is comprised of detailed data on individual accidents collected by EU Member States. This structure allows for maximum flexibility and potential with regard to analysing the information contained in the system, and offers new possibilities in the field of accident analysis. The purpose of the CARE system is to provide a powerful tool that makes possible the identification and quantification of road safety problems throughout Europe, evaluation of road safety measure efficiency, determination of Community action relevance and to facilitate the exchange of experiences in this field. The CARE database is accessible via dialup-router connection or within so called secure networks (https://care.eu-admin.net/wi/). The Internet front-end is set up by the Info View® and WebIntelligence® engines. InfoView gives one an instant overview of all the documents available in the corporate database and allows one to view, refresh and share these documents. With WebIntelligence, one can create, edit and analyse documents. This user manual has been generated within the scope of ASTERYX – Assessing the European Road Safety Problem – An exploitation study of the CARE database, carried out by the following partners: - KfV (Austria, coordinator), - SWOV (The Netherlands), - C.E.T.E. (France), - DfT (United Kingdom). The next chapter gives instructions on how to install the CARE database on your system. Chapter 3 gives an introduction to the CARE –database’s most important functionalities (see .. 3 How to use CARE – Quick reference), Chapter 4 describes further system potential (see .. 4 How to use CARE – Detailed reference). In Chapter 5, you will learn about .. 5 Using the Online Help and Interface Reference. The Annex contains a glossary of definitions related to the database.
