Samenvatting

The French Ministry of Transport has undertaken a major experimental and evaluation program to assess the effects of the LAVIA (French acronym for Limiteur s'Adaptant a la Vitesse Autorisee, or Adaptable Speed Limiter) system in terms of both driver acceptance and effectiveness in average dailytravel speed reduction. The LAVIA system has been tested with respect to three variants: advisory, voluntary limited and mandatory limited. After carrying out a preliminary evaluation on a fixed route with a small set of volunteer drivers, the experiment was extended over a full year with a onehundred-driver sample. A wide array of driving parameters were recorded and processed using distinct statistical techniques in order to characterize the technical operations of system variants, driver assimilation of these features, and their effects on driving performance. The initial set of results on implementation of the three system variants is presented and their impacts on speed behavior are assessed. For the covering abstract see ITRD E134653.
