Samenvatting

This paper has the aim of presenting the general lines supporting the design of a digital transmission system to be used for Road Transport Informatics (RTI) thus providing the elements and criteria for the assessment methodology and consequent choice of the most effective solutions. In fact different techniques (e.g. microwave, infrared and inductive cable) are currently investigated in order to design a data transmission system for a specific RTI application. This article deals only with telecommunication issues, but the final assessment will also take into account more general aspects related to the impact of the proposed system at vehicle level, road side level and environmental level: the overall procedure which has been proposed by a group formed by Bakkenist Management Consultants, Fondazione Ugo Bordoni and Volkswagen, at the beginning of the DACAR project can be found in. The DACAR project is a part of the DRIVE Programme, which is partly supported by the European Economic Community. The future work and the required inputs, coming also from outside DACAR Project, are pointed out, as well.
