This paper presents the results of rural traveler information needs assessment conducted as part of US DOT Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) research project on Rural Applications of Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS). The focus of traveler information needs assessment was on the comprehensive understanding of the types of information required by different classes of travelers. For this purpose, the perspectives of general travelers, commercial operators, and of providers of services and other interest groups were elicited. Overall, 61 one to one interviews and 525 telephone interviews were completed with various individuals and groups. Users were asked to assign importance ratings to various categories of information. The categories of information included: a) pre-trip information about road or weather conditions or journey times; b) en route information; and c) emergency warning systems such as automatic warnings of driver drowsiness, emergency calls, or warning about approaching hazards. Emergency, safety and trip routing information were found to be primary requirements. (A)
