Samenvatting

China Steel Corporation (CSC) generates 2.4 million metric tons of slags as by products annually. CSC slags give good results when used as the base course or the subbase course for pavements. When used for surface course, they are merited by resource and landscape preservation, minimization of river excavation, and most significantly great savings of dumping expenses. The increase in surface bonding strength and internal cohesion by the use of CSC slags are largely attributable to their high porosity and angularity. Because they have high oil content, stability value and unit weight, lower flow value and porosity. The Marshall design values of slag asphalt concrete can meet all the highway specifications. The tested pavements based on a two-year study of recycled slags as the surface course materials are advantageous of reduced PSI variations, higher resistance to skid and plastic deformation. The performance test conducted along Route 188, running from Likang to Kaoshu in Pingtung county gave excellent results. The slag pavement is superior to the crushed stone pavement either in durability or in serviceability. (A)
