Samenvatting

The development of an Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) is not a new task for consultants in the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) field. However, such development can often be limited or restricted by existing national standards, existing earlier design ITS systems, or the proximity to adjacent jurisdictions that may require inter-operability. The development of the ATMS in Auckland, New Zealand was not restricted in any of these ways and consequently the project team has been able to draw on up to date strategies, standards and technologies from around the world, creating a truly international project. This paper discusses the development and deployment of the Auckland ATMS and highlight how the team drew on ATMS experience from around the world and incorporated into the planning, design and specification process elements such as: value management (New Zealand); value engineering (North America); ITS planning process (US FHWA); NTCIP (North America); variable speed and lane control strategies (UK); and equipment performance specifications (Europe).
