The Department of Infrastructure and Transport assists the Australian Government to improve infrastructure across Australia, foster an efficient, sustainable, competitive, safe and secure transport system for all transport users and coordinate community infrastructure and services in rural, regional and local government areas. These goals cannot be achieved without ready reference to a wide range of up-to-date statistics. The main aim of this publication, is to provide a single comprehensive annual source of Australian infrastructure statistics for use by policymakers, industry leaders, transport analysts and the wider Australian community. The publication is primarily a source of long-term, aggregate time series infrastructure statistics. In most cases the time series extend to 2010–11. A brief introduction is provided to explain the structure of the publication and areas identified for further development. Most statistics included in the publication are currently collected by BITRE or other Australian, state or territory government agencies. The tables in the Australian Infrastructure Statistics Yearbook are presented within a logical framework to assist the comparison and analysis of statistics across the various forms of infrastructure. This framework also identifies areas where further statistics may provide a more complete statistical picture of Australian infrastructure.
