The principal design regulations affecting vehicle crashworthiness are the Australian Design Rules for motor vehicle safety (ADRs). The paper discusses the development and operation of the ADR system, including recent changes and the increasing emphasis on international harmonization. Consequences of the ADR system for crashworthiness are discussed and those ADRS influencing crashworthiness are identified. In addition current developments, particularly in the area of bus and coach safety, are discussed (A).
