This chapter provides an overview of the transport situation in Austria. Transport determinants are examined including a) geography, b) population forecasts, c) employment, d) education, e) the economy and f) temporal patterns. The transportation system is described including a) the structure of the public transport system, b) car ownership and use, c) urban and regional transport, d) interurban transport and e) rural transport. Travel patterns are considered in more detail with statistics relating to 1983 and forecast for 2011. Comparisons are made of a) number of mobile persons, b) trip frequency, c) trip distance, d) daily travel duration, e) door-to-door speed, f) modal split and g) travel kilometrage. Austria's policy making structure is described, its main concerns outlined and its role in European transport policy considered.
