Samenvatting
The article summarises a survey of literature on the factors affecting the ownership and use of the private car and on instruments by which the level of ownership and use can be reduced. The most relevant literature on the fields of (transport) economics, geography, town and country planning and traffic engineering is covered. The survey resulted in recommendations for further research into this field, aimed at policies to reduce the negative effects of the transport system in a context of guarding its social and economic benefits.
