Linear regression is used to relate characteristics of cars and their drivers to the amount of fuel used per kilometre driven. Data are derived from the Dutch Private Car Panel (PAP). Car characteristics (weight, cylinder volume, age, fuel type) were of significant importance as should be expected. However, most driver characteristics (for instance gender, income) seemed to be of negligible importance, which is somewhat contrary to the expectations, which were based on the literature. On the other hand, changes in fuel prices (which were relatively large in 1986, the year to which the data refer) seem to have a significant influence on driver behaviour and, therefore, on fuel use.
